Why Is My Heater Running but Not Warming My Home?

When your heater runs but your home still feels cold, start with a few simple checks: confirm the thermostat is set to Heat, replace a dirty air filter, and make sure supply vents are open and unobstructed. If the system still isn’t heating properly, it may need professional service.

Common reasons your heater isn’t warming the house

  • Dirty air filter: A clogged filter restricts airflow and can make heating less effective. Replace it with the correct size and type for your system.

  • Thermostat settings or batteries: Check that the thermostat is set to Heat and the temperature is above the current room temperature. Replace batteries if needed.

  • Blocked vents: Move furniture, rugs, or curtains away from supply vents and return grilles.

  • Heat-pump defrost cycle: In cold, damp weather, a heat pump may briefly pause heating while it defrosts. If it stays in this mode or blows cool air for an extended period, schedule an inspection.

  • Equipment problem: A system that repeatedly shuts off, makes unusual noises, or cannot maintain a comfortable temperature may have a mechanical or electrical issue.

What should you do first?

  1. Set the thermostat to Heat and raise the setting a few degrees.

  2. Check and replace the air filter if it’s dirty.

  3. Make sure vents and return grilles are open and clear.

  4. Check the outdoor heat-pump unit for visible snow or debris, but don’t chip ice or open equipment panels.

  5. If the problem continues, turn the system off if you notice smoke, a burning smell that doesn’t quickly fade, or unusual electrical sounds, and contact an HVAC professional.

Never try to repair gas, electrical, or refrigerant components yourself. If these basic checks don’t restore heat, a technician can identify the cause and recommend a safe repair.
